The claims response service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and provides immediate global assistance to all of our Members.

Calling the emergency contact number provides a quick and effective way to speak directly to a duty Shipowners’ claims handler in the event of an incident or casualty involving an entered vessel.

During office hours the emergency number will redirect to the relevant corresponding office switchboard.

Alternatively, Members can request assistance from our network of correspondents located around the world.

The health and wellbeing of seafarers is a priority for the Club. Each year the Club handles claims arising from pre-existing or congenital conditions, including heart disease, that were not detected before the seafarer joined the vessel. At sea, distance is what makes these cases difficult. A condition that would be manageable ashore can become serious on a vessel trading in a remote area with limited access to evacuation or specialist care. Behind each of those cases is a family waiting for news.

A review of the Club's crew illness claims across the five policy years leading to 2021 identified 21 distinct illnesses that had given rise to claims. At least ten of them could reasonably have been detected earlier through an enhanced pre-employment medical examination. Medisea was built on that finding.

Medisea is the Club's Medical Enhancement Scheme for Seafarers, an enhanced pre-employment medical examination for crew serving on Members' vessels. It builds on the statutory examination required under the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 and adds a further layer of screening within the same clinic visit. The additional tests cover areas such as cardiac risk, diabetes, liver and kidney function, hepatitis B, HIV, a full lipid profile, abdominal ultrasound and drug screening.

Medisea enhances the existing requirement rather than replacing it. The MLC certificate continues to be issued, and where a national or flag state certificate was previously issued alongside it, that continues too. Charterer specific medicals, such as the OEUK examination (formerly known as OGUK) or Petronas requirements, can be completed during the same visit.

Only clinics accredited by the Club should be used. Accreditation follows a detailed audit by a trained medical practitioner experienced in these programmes. Accredited clinics are re-audited at least annually, and a clinic that does not maintain the required standard is removed from the network. Certificates already issued through a clinic that later leaves the network remain valid.

The network covers 8 countries, with over 100 accredited locations across more than 50 cities. The current list for each country is published below.

Medisea is available to all Members as part of Club membership, with no separate enrolment.
