- Celebrating a Decade of Partnership: The Shipowners' Club and ISWAN
The Club is proud to mark 10 years of partnership with the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN). Over the past decade, we have worked together to strengthen the wellbeing, safety and support available to seafarers worldwide. What began as a shared commitment to improving life at sea has evolved into a trusted and resilient collaboration that continues to deliver meaningful impact for our Members, seafarers and the wider maritime sector.
As we mark 10 years of collaboration, we reflect on five core benefits that this partnership brings to our Members and seafarers, and five standout achievements and activities that have shaped our joint efforts over the past decade.
Five Core Benefits of the Partnership:
Practical guidance that supports wellbeing an safety
Fatigue, stress and isolation often develop gradually. Together, we have created accessible guidance that helps seafarers recognise early warning signs, take preventative action and contribute to safer shipboard operations.
Improving access to wellbeing support through digital tools
Through the ISWAN for Seafarers app, this partnership has helped to remove barriers to accessing support. The app offers seafarers a single, convenient place to find everything they need - quick, direct access to ISWAN’s helpline channels and offline access to a range of resources and guidance, making support available whenever seafarers need it.
Greater awareness of 24-hour, confidential support for seafarers
By actively promoting ISWAN’s helpline services, the Club has played a key role in ensuring that more seafarers are aware of the support available to them. This increased visibility helps seafarers recognise that trustworthy, confidential assistance exists and encourages them to seek help earlier, improving both individual wellbeing and overall safety on board.
Learning from real experiences to inform better support
Feedback gathered through ISWAN’s direct engagement with seafarers helps the Club refine guidance and strengthen prevention strategies. This ensures the support we provide remains relevant and informed by lived experience.
A long-term, shared commitment to embedding care into maritime culture
A decade of collaboration underscores a sustained dedication to embedding care into maritime culture. The partnership continuously reinforces the message that seafarer wellbeing is a long-term responsibility.
Five Key Collaborations Over the Last 10-Years:
Launch of the ‘ISWAN for Seafarers’ app
Introduced in 2021, the app provides a direct line to ISWAN’s 24-hour, confidential helplines and offline access to a range of health and wellbeing resources for seafarers and their families, bringing reliable support directly to seafarers worldwide.
Joint work on decarbonisation and seafarer mpact
As the maritime industry advances towards decarbonisation, the Club and ISWAN have collaborated to better understand and address how this transition affects the people working on board. ISWAN’s 2024 report into the wellbeing impact of decarbonisation informed the guidance jointly published, offering practical recommendations for maritime companies and seafarers. This work has been supported by shared public engagement, including a podcast discussion featuring Chirag Bahri and Ian Grainger, and Louise Hall’s contribution to a panel at the 2024 ISWAN Seminar in India to discuss the complex challenges posed by the industry’s shift towards decarbonisation.
Celebrating milestones together
Over the years, the partnership has been marked by shared moments of recognition and community. The Club was proud to host a reception at our London office to mark ISWAN's fifth anniversary, and we look forward to welcoming ISWAN representatives again at our forthcoming Club event as we celebrate a decade of collaboration.
Publication of 'Psychological Wellbeing at Sea' articles
Responding to the growing number of mental‑health‑related cases reported within the industry, the Club and ISWAN worked together to publish a series of Psychological Wellbeing at Sea articles. These offered practical advice and aimed to raise awareness of psychological pressures faced at sea.
Collaboration on the Seafarers Health Information Programmes (SHIP)
Through the SHIP initiative, the Club and ISWAN have distributed clear, accessible information on nutrition, fitness, personal safety and broader health and wellbeing. These materials provide seafarers with straightforward advice to support everyday health and prevent common risks during travel and service.
Simon Grainge, ISWAN’s Chief Executive Officer:
“Seafarers tell us they value support that is trusted, independent, and available when it matters most. Our partnership with the Club has helped make that possible over the past decade. Together, we’ve focused on listening to seafarers, responding to real needs, and removing barriers to getting help. Reaching 10 years is significant, but what matters most is the difference that support continues to make in seafarers’ everyday lives at sea.”
Louise Hall, Director – Loss Prevention, Corporate Responsibility & Marketing at the Shipowners’ Club:
“From the beginning, this partnership has been about people. Seafarers face unique pressures including long periods away from home, isolation, fatigue. The Club has always believed that supporting their wellbeing is fundamental to safe and sustainable operations. Working with ISWAN over the past ten years has helped us make that support practical, accessible, and real for the people who need it most. That focus will continue to guide us into the next decade”
As we celebrate this ten‑year milestone, we recognise not only what has been achieved together, but also the importance of continuing to evolve. The maritime landscape is changing rapidly, and the challenges seafarers face, whether technological, environmental or personal, are changing with it. Our partnership with ISWAN will continue to adapt, innovate and advocate, ensuring that seafarers remain supported, heard and valued. Together, we look forward to the next decade of collaboration and to strengthening our shared commitment to improving life at sea.
Over the next 10 months, we will be highlighting each one of these 10 benefits and collaborations across our digital channels, so be sure to keep an eye on both ISWAN’s and the Club’s LinkedIn pages.
